Redesigning Your Website? Follow This Checklist or Watch Your Rankings Collapse.
A website migration — redesign, domain change, platform switch, or URL structure change — is the single highest-risk event for SEO. Get it wrong and rankings that took years to build can disappear overnight. Get it right and the transition is seamless. Here is the checklist for Gulf businesses.
“More rankings are lost during website migrations than from any other cause. A migration done without an SEO checklist is a gamble with your business.”
The Migration SEO Checklist
Before: Crawl your current site and export every URL. Map every old URL to its new URL — every single one. Prepare 301 redirects for every changed URL. Backup everything. During: Block search engines from the staging site. Launch during a low-traffic period. Implement redirects immediately. Update your XML sitemap and submit to Google. Update all internal links to point to new URLs. After: Monitor Search Console for 404 errors and redirect issues. Watch traffic daily for the first month. Fix problems immediately. Google will reprocess your site over several weeks — rankings typically stabilise within 30-60 days. For content quality during and after migration, see our SEO articles. “A well-planned migration preserves your rankings. A rushed migration destroys them. The difference is the checklist.”
