The Safe Theme Switch Process
1. Test on staging first. Never activate a new theme on your live site without testing. Switch on staging, check every page type — homepage, single post, archive, contact page, WooCommerce pages. 2. Audit before and after. Before switching: screenshot your key pages. After switching: compare. What changed? What is missing? Widgets often get moved to inactive. Menus may need reassignment. Custom CSS may need porting to the new theme. 3. Save customisations. Any custom code in your old theme’s functions.php, any custom CSS, any template overrides — export and save these before switching. You may need to recreate them in the new theme. 4. Check mobile and speed. The new theme may look great on desktop and terrible on mobile. Test both.
