Maintenance mode displays a friendly page to visitors while you update your site — explaining that the site will be back shortly and providing a way to contact you. Without it, visitors see broken pages, error messages, or partially loaded content during updates. Done correctly, maintenance mode does not impact SEO at all.

SEO considerations: WordPress automatically returns a 503 Service Unavailable HTTP status code during maintenance mode — which tells Google the downtime is temporary. Do not keep maintenance mode active for more than a few hours. After finishing updates, disable maintenance mode immediately. Google will re-crawl and re-index your pages normally.
